Thank you for considering The Little Swim School for your Learn to Swim journey. We’re excited to share our knowledge and passion with you, and we very much looking forward to welcoming you to the TLSS family.
Industry studies have shown that earlier exposure to swim lessons helps with water safety, and water familiarisation, as well as social and cognitive development. The Aquatic Industry recommends you start at home with water play from birth and formal lessons from between 3-6 months. It is, however, never too late to start learning water safety and swimming skills. During the early stage lessons for students of all ages, we work on breath control and submersion, water familiarisation, safe entries and exits, grips and holds. The lessons change and vary based on your child's physical and emotional development. For example, we only introduce standing jumps when the child can physically do it, to avoid any injuries. We teach you take-home skills that will assist you in daily life. We offer a force-free and child-led learning approach to our classes.
We have classes available 7 days a week, throughout the day and in the evenings. The available class times will depend on the age & assessed level of the student, and we make every effort to accommodate siblings to have their lessons on the same day wherever possible. We operate in line with the Victorian School Terms, with breaks during the school holidays. We welcome new students to join us at any time and can enrol students up to 7 days in advance. Our fees are payable in advance on a monthly basis.
Our Group Lessons run for 30 minutes and cost $22.50 per session*. Being a small private swim school, we are able to offer low traffic times to suit the sensory needs of your little one. Our teachers will be provided with all the information needed to be adequately prepared to support your little one in their swimming journey. We also offer Private and Semi-Private classes that might be more suitable for your needs.
*Please note: prices are subject to change on 1st October, annually
The Little Swim School is a family-owned business that operates with passion and purpose to offer quality swimming and water safety programs. Our Founder and Director, Jess, has been part of the aquatic industry for almost 20 years. Her career has seen her in a variety of roles, searching for her place within the working community. About 10 years ago while she was searching for her "grown-up" career, Jess discovered that her passion and purpose were right in front of her! It was time to become the master of her craft. Over the past decade, Jess has managed large swim schools in local government-run pools with over 2,500 students and has worked for peak industry bodies including Life Saving Victoria and AUSTSWIM. Jess also teaches pool lifeguard courses, swimming training and water safety courses. Jess is dedicated to teaching swimming to children of all ages and loves seeing the progress in all of her students.
Jess wants to make a difference and an impact, and with her husband Trav, they decided the best way to do this is by opening their own swim school. This decision has allowed Jess to operate in a way where her business can be run with passion and purpose, she can be creative and dynamic, and take a personalised approach to all students, without the limitations of working in a larger centre. The Little Swim School strives to be innovative, passionate, and perfect. We have the opportunity to train and reward staff, and we can empower our team to find their love of aquatics, just like Jess has.
Our pool is a MagnaPool, meaning we clean the water using magnesium instead of solely using chlorine. The result is water that is softer and easier on asthmatics and those with skin conditions. Our pool sits at a very comfortable 32-33°C all year. The pool is 15m long x 5m wide and has a uniform depth of 1.1m. There are stairs available for easy water entry.
We also offer a “Rinse & Go” station to rinse off under after your lesson, as well as private and communal change rooms for parents and kids.
Some children may need additional time to prepare themselves for their first lesson. If this sounds familiar, we recommend that you come down during an off-peak time to have a tour of the facility and potentially meet their new teacher prior to their first lesson. On the day of your first lesson, we recommend that you aim to arrive at the centre 5-10 minutes before your lesson starts. This will give you and your child time to familiarise yourselves with the facility and get ready without rushing.
Swimmers must wear bathers to participate in lessons. A rashie can help in the cooler months. Goggles and Swim Caps are optional (your teacher will let you know if they are necessary) but we do recommend them for a better swimming experience. Long hair should be tied back from the face. If you are participating in a Parent & Child Class it is recommended that you wear a loose-fitting t-shirt over your bathers so your child has something to hold onto should they be looking for security. A t-shirt is much easier for little fingers to grasp and much more comfortable for you than bare skin or them accidentally exposing you! Be sure to bring a towel and/or a robe or deck coat. It is highly recommended to bring a water bottle, and snacks are always helpful after a lesson. We ask that you please refrain from eating meals whilst in our facility. Glass containers are not permitted.
We want to avoid any accidents so we can keep our pool water at the highest quality. All children under 3 years or who are not toilet trained must wear an Aqua Nappy. In our experience, these offer the best accident protection. Reusable Aqua Nappies are available to purchase from reception should you require.Disposable Aqua Nappies can be purchased from reception and from major retailers and pharmacies. These are OK, but not the best long-term solution. Please do not wear a regular nappy in the pool, these will continue to absorb water until they burst and release the enclosed gel into the pool.
Information following is provided by the Victorian Department of Health and can be seen in full here.
We treat our water thoroughly to keep our pool safe and clean, but there are simple things you can do to help. Pathogens are microorganisms (bacteria, viruses and parasites) that cause illness. They can be introduced to the water by contaminants people carry on their bodies. Practising good hygiene before swimming helps to prevent contamination.
Steps to Healthy Swimming
By following these simple steps, you can help keep the pool safe and clean:
We can all carry pathogens on our bodies, which can wash off and contaminate pool water. Chlorine can kill most pathogens, but it doesn’t kill them straight away. Some parasites, like Cryptosporidium, can survive in pools for days.
We are more likely to be infectious when we are not feeling well. For example, when you have an upset stomach or diarrhoea, there are thousands of pathogens in your faeces and traces on your bottom. These pathogens can wash off and contaminate the pool whenever you swim.
To keep pathogens out of the pool, it is important not to swim with diarrhoea.
When you have an infection, you should not swim while infectious. For example:
You can ask your general practitioner (GP) for advice about swimming if you or your children are diagnosed with any infection. If you or your family develop a gastrointestinal illness after swimming at a public pool, contact the pool manager so any potential outbreak can be monitored.
How You Can Help to Prevent Faecal Accidents
Young children may still be learning to control their bowel movements, so parents and supervisors should be extra careful to prevent faecal accidents.
To prevent faecal contamination:
